by Larry Foster
Rabbi Edwin Friedman studied under his major mentor, Dr. Murray Bowen. In this relationship Friedman used theory as developed by Bowen for the "integration of his own thinking." His work with the process of integrating Bowen Theory into his own thinking led to a strong emphasis on leadership, health, spirituality, and some theological reflection. As a rabbi and family therapist, Friedman made application of family systems theory that ranged from the individual to civilization. This writer refers to the work and relationship of Dr. Bowen and Rabbi Friedman as the "Bowen/Friedman Axis.
